CitiLog Visits Anheuser-Busch

Last week, a few members of the CitiLog Team, visited Anheuser-Busch in Newark and had a successful meeting filled with positive collaboration opportunities. We met with Lindsey Aeillo, Anheuser-Busch's Environmental Manager, and learned they have many of the same green initiatives as us. Also present for the meeting were representatives from the Newark Habitat for Humanity. CitiLog is working to collaborate with both of these influential companies to provide material for the 2013 Habitat project. Newark businesses working for a greener tomorrow!

Think Bigger

This plaque was crafted from a unique slab of Curly Maple with CitiLog Founder, Stubby Warmbold's quote "Think Bigger...big is not enough." The edges were stained to add dimension to the wall plaque.

The quote signifies the importance of never losing ambition, while always encouraging big ideas and taking risks.

CitiLog White Oak Collection

Our CitiLog designer, Emma Tinsman, is at it again! She designed a beautiful, custom-made White Oak side board for a private residence. This side board is part of the same collection as the White Oak island that we featured previously. Both pieces of furniture, constructed out of upcycled urban wood from the CitiLog Newark Sawmill, have stainless steel accents and hardware that add to their unique aesthetic.

Survived Snow Storm Nemo!

We are very happy that snow storm Nemo has passed- even though we got hit with quite a bit of snow, this is considered nothing compared to folks further north who got over 2'! As you know, we love pictures of our logs covered in snow- they look so beautiful, so here is another one to check out! Some CitiLog workers put in a few hours on Saturday in order to clear the paths of snow so log trucks can still access our sawmill to drop off logs.

Good thing most of our machinery, such as the main saw, is protected by our hoop structure so we are still able to saw. This great picture was taken by Bryce, CitiLog Employee. An upcycled tree sawn into industrial board- fresh off of the saw!

Another Site Visit!

Yesterday, one of our CitiLog craftsmen came to the sawmill to pick out some beautiful logs for future projects. The weather was gorgeous and we had a great time! For the few hours we were there, we saw three loads of logs get dropped off. It is hard to believe, with such little room left, our piles are still growing!

A Visit from Prudential

Today, we were lucky enough to have Cindy Hu from Prudential visit the Newark sawmill and see the saw running! This is a very exciting and pivotal event in CitiLog's journey of upcycling urban logs.

Retirement Plaque

Custom Retirement Plaque 

CitiLog crafted this retirement plaque from various types of urban wood. A unique Oak burl frames the plaque and gives depth to the piece. Knotted Maple backs the plaque and was laser engraved with a special note for the retiree. A CitiLog craftsman created the custom piece to signify a beautiful natural landscape and the retiree’s time spent in the forest service. The open space between the burl frame and Maple plaque represents the sky and an outline of mountain tops. A tree was carved out of Cherry in the shape of the retiree’s favorite tree species, White Pine. The knot behind the tree signifies the setting sun.

Triage of Logs at CitiLog Newark

Yesterday we received 25 truckloads of logs at CitiLog Newark! The photographs below show the vast amount of material we have on our site. Once the logs are dropped off they are separated by length. The dunnage and waste material is also separated and will be used in our green power station.

Recovering After the Storm

After a long and interesting week since Hurricane Sandy, CitiLog Newark is still cleaning up like many others in the area. Some of our shipping containers fell over from the high winds and today we rented a crane to pick them back up again. However, none of this stopped us from working! The Newark Sawmill only lost 1 day of work due to the storm, and even stayed open on Saturday to receive logs. 

Trucks were lining up on the street to drop off loads of logs. Some logs even arrived in unconventional ways, such as dump trucks. When a tree falls, CitiLog hears it!

With the crane that picked up our knocked over shipping containers, our teammates were able to make more progress on our biomass power unit. 

Hurricane Sandy

Hope everyone is safe and sound after Hurricane Sandy. The CitiLog Newark Sawmill sustained minimal damage and the office in Pittstown is still without power, but we are all doing well!

CitiLog Newark has received several large loads of logs this week. Many trees have come down from storm damage and are causing hazards in surrounding towns. All downed trees can be taken to CitiLog Newark! We are receiving logs at no charge! For more information, feel free to call us (908)-735-8871.

More Progress on the Power Unit

Yesterday, the CitiLog Newark team made more progress installing the power unit at the Newark sawmill. They worked hard putting refractory blocks in with chain blocks.

Once the power unit is complete our site will be 100% self-sufficient; producing our own electricity, heating, and eventually cooling.

CitiLog's Green Groundbreaking Award

The CitiLog team attended the USGBCNJ 10th Anniversary Gala this past Thursday at Revel Resort & Casino. CitiLog was the winner of the Green Ground Breaking Award which honors companies that are on the cutting edge of sustainability and green building.

Our CitiLog Newark Sawmill was recognized for creating a true, zero-waste facility in New Jersey and generating green collar jobs that cannot be exported. Congratulations to all of this year's award winners, and thank you to the USGBCNJ for hosting such a great event!

Log Garden

We don't let anything go to waste! Even this rotted log, that would typically be dumped into a landfill, can be repurposed into a planter in just a few easy steps.

1. Scoop out the inside of the log with a small garden shovel to created a well for your plants
2. Fill in the log with desired amount of potting soil, depending on the size of the plant you plan on using
3. For smaller logs with shallow wells, succulents are a good option because they do not require as much water or soil as other plants. For logs with deeper wells, add extra soil and plant flowers such as Black Eyed Susans (our favorite at CitiLog!)

Beginnings of Power at Newark

The day began as a crane moved pieces of the unit off the truck and into place.

By the end of the day, phase one of the power station install is completed.

Yesterday marked phase one of CitiLog Newark's power station install. Our team worked throughout the day as components of the station were delivered on to the site. With the assistance of the crew, a large crane positioned the components into place.

Once the power unit is complete our site will be 100% self-sufficient; producing our own electricity, heating, and eventually cooling. Due to the unique characteristics of urban trees such as holes, rot, metal containment, etc., urban areas have a high rate of unusable and disposable wood. CitiLog uses this disposable wood to create green power.
