The contrast between natural and man-made elements on the
exterior façade of the Westhill School in Syracuse, NY, makes for a striking
display. Black Locust Lumber provided FSC certified, #1 grade material for the
custom ship lap siding that wraps the structure designed by
Ashley McGrawArchitects.
Horizontal portions of Black Locust along the windows act as
a visual aid that guides viewers towards the main entryway. Vertical siding on
the cantilevered portion of the structure also acts as a visual aid,
reinforcing the entryway as the hierarchical component.
The Black Locust was recently installed, and will soon weather
into a beautiful silvery-gray patina. Once the material greys, the Black Locust
and brick will form a more cohesive entity. Check back in a few months to see updated photographs of the Westhill School once the patina has developed.
